Amazing Musical Facts: The Tree Man Gets Back to his Roots

This one is a bit extreme on the 'unusual' scale but please stick with it.

It features a man dressed as a tree. All kinds of things happen at the bottom of my garden in the early hours of the morning. I came across this scene on Midsummers Night. I rushed for my camera and here it is.

Benny Hill who like Elvis is not really dead but living in disguise in Diss, reciting the lyrics to old folk songs.

Baker Street: Gerry Rafferty

Amazing Music Facts: This is one for the wrinklies. In the mid 1970s there was a vibrant Welsh music scene in London. The big names, ie the likes of Billy Connolly, Ralph McTell and Gerry Rafferty were great friends as well a competitors. In 1975 Ralph McTell had released "Streets of London" which is about how the streets in London all connect (either at right angles, as a continuation or around corners)---(see below for how the Guiseley Country Band 'Talking Heads refuted this in their classic song about Cul-de-sacs inside the M25, "I am on the Road to Norwich").One day in a Welsh Cafe on Baker Street Billy Connolly was teasing Gerry about Ralphs earnings from the London street & transport songs.Gerry said that he would go one step further, and write about the 'underground streets of London' ie the Underground and how many of these were named about charectars in Sherlock Holmes books. The song 'Baker Street' was a result of that meeting. Listen out for them.

When the Eagles Played Idle Working Mens Club

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWMHIR94rrY

How Long by the Eagles

Amazing Musical Facts:

Eagles band leader, Don Henley grew up in the famous 'Shoddy Triangle' area around Batley, West Yorks. Inspired by the ecological paradise on his doorstep he went onto study evolutionary Biology at Bingley University. There he met Glen Frey who was studying sheep management at a nearby ewe-niversity. Don's near obsession with biology and evolutionary diversity led him to call their first group 'The Beagles' . They had a top 100 hit in 1970 with a cover of the Elvis classic , 'Houndog'. Things were going nowhere so Glenn pushed for a change of name. Don, true to the biology theme chose 'The Seagulls'. Years went by and still the big break through was not coming. Then one night after an awful performance at the 'Idle Working Mens Cub' near Bradford, third band member Joe Walsh from Addingham lost his temper. In his broad Yorkshire accent he exclaimed, "Eeh, tha's obsessed with gulls". The band went quite and looked at each other. "Thats it, we can be the 'Heegles'

Rubys Grandad was Mr Bojangles

Mr Bojangles
Amazing Musical Facts: One up and two across. What a difference a typing error can make. Partially sited Jerry Jeff Walker set out to write this song for his old airforce friend Mr Bob Angles. Jerry, in a rush to send the song off to the publishers, hit the wrong key when typing the title. He ment to strike the 'B' key, but he misjudged and hit 'J' instead. Mr Bob Angles became Mr Bojangles. By the time the error was realised it was too late. The records had gone to press and reality had to be made to match perception. Mr Bob Angles has asserted that he should receive a share in the royalties from the song, as it was his name, mistyped which started it all off. Jerry Jeff said ,,,,,,,,,no.

All because the wrong key was hit all those years ago. Ruby B. None of this is true, and your grandads real name was Mr Bojangles.

NELLY THE ELEPHANT

Amazing Musical Facts
In 1957 Nelly (National Elephant Liberation League Yeadon- Marxist-Lenninist) was formed as a militant
off-shoot from the RSPCA. This song was the organisations anthem...a rousing call to freedom for elephants everywhere.

The early years were tough but from the 1970s the elephants were "slipping their chains" everywhere and going off to live normal lives.

Nelly herself has even taken out a subscription to face book (Name: Nelly Le Phant ). A quick search on google helped me identify other elephants living out apparently normal lives in the community eg T. Runk in Swaffam, Norfolk. Other animals have followed the clarion call. There is Anna Conda in Coventry and a Mr C. Lion in Leicester (for some reason the midlands andf north Norfolk seem common).

Lynyrd Skynyard: Freebird

Amazing Musical Facts:

This one can literally blow you away. Just out of camera, at the front of the stage is a giant wind machine.Look at peoples hair.I first became aware of this song whilst pretending to be a Gasman at Leeds Poly dances during the late 1970's. This version is more than 9 minutes long. Each year on August 1st people through out the world compete to see how much of something they can do during those 9 minutes. A man called Paul Crane, who had previously been an artificial limb technician at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds drank 12 pints of Tetley's Bitter (not recommended). This was after he had returned from a 6 month stint in the desert repairing oil pipelines in Libya. I use the record to time myself cleaning the front room on a Sunday morning. Not really Rock and Roll.(Truth Content 0%)

Amazing Musical Facts: Boz is best know for his unique ability to type with his toes,a skill he perfected when, as working as a newspaper journalist he often had to cover two stories at once. Boz beleives that this technique (toe typing) brings more sole to his music. Since the introduction of the computer and word processors, Boz has been struggling to find the right key and has had no major hits.Truth Content 0%
